Another 33% say they know some about individual finances, while 13% state they don't know much or understand nothing at all, according to a 2023 Pew Research study Center survey. Understanding about individual financial resources can describe numerous methods for managing cash, including conserving, budgeting, handling financial obligation or investing.
We surveyed 7,470 U.S. adults from Sept. 12 to 24, 2023, in English and Spanish. The Black adult sample consisted of those who identify as Black and non-Hispanic, multiracial Black and non-Hispanic, or Black and Hispanic.
Respondents were hired through national, random tasting of domestic addresses. Recruiting panelists by mail makes sure that nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of choice. About half of Asian adults (49%) state the same. Grownups ages 50 and older (63%) are more most likely than those 18 to 49 (45%) to state they are educated about personal financial resources.
About a quarter of Hispanic adults (27%) say the exact same, higher than among Asian (17%), Black (14%) or White grownups (8%). U.S. grownups have blended confidence in their ability to carry out different financial abilities. The Majority Of Americans (75%) say they are exceptionally or very confident in their ability to find their credit report.
By contrast, just 27% express confidence in their ability to develop a financial investment plan to develop wealth. Americans' confidence in these skills varies by earnings, race and age: U.S. adults with upper earnings are most likely than those with middle or lower earnings to state they are confident in their capability to do each of these things.
Adults ages 50 and older are more likely than those 18 to 49 to have self-confidence in their ability to do each job other than produce an investment strategy. Across age, similarly small shares reveal self-confidence they can do that. In addition, about one-in-five U.S. grownups (21%) are confident in their ability to perform every financial skill we asked about.
Meanwhile, 13% of Americans are not positive in their capability to do any of these finance skills. Hispanic (21%), Asian (21%) and Black adults (17%) are more most likely than White grownups (8%) to say this. And 22% of those with lower earnings say this, compared with fewer than 10% of those with middle or upper incomes (9% and 5% respectively).
Fairly few Americans have actually learnt more about this in school, our survey finds. Amongst U.S. grownups who are experienced about individual finances, 49% say they learned a terrific deal or a fair amount about personal finances from household and buddies. That is the greatest share for any source we inquired about.
